And you only find out when you pull out that all important mobile number and there is a void on the other end. This number is no longer in service. After checking and re-trying a few times you must accept the evidence. Your man, whom you had assumed would be in London forever, thought better of it all and decided to get on to the next Stanstead flight home. So now what? You had known this guy for five years and you could safely leave him alone in your house. You had even gone on holiday once and left him in charge of finishing a bathroom. A trustworty, good builder is like your GP or your accountant. He provides crucial professional support to your family and your life. Looking for a new one, I realized how important these relationships are and how they should be recognized and nurtured. It would be months if not years before I could get someone I could trust like that. My advice: When you find a builder you get on with and you can trust, take care of that relationship. Don't take it for granted that he'll always be there. Send him a Christmas card, just like you do with your son's math tutor and your yoga instructor. Give him some business, recommend him to your friends and family. Inquire about his health, his family. These are all small things that can go a long way. Perhaps even in keeping him in London!
